THE HANOK ARCHIVE BY THE CHAE × Movement Lab
For our first project, we partnered with the premium living brand Movement Lab to create a special space in Changseong-dong.
More than a place to stay, it is a setting where guests can experience and share the deeper value of Korean culture.
/
At the intersection of tradition and modernity, we hope to create new cultural narratives, rediscover our collective identity, and inspire both emotion and intellect within the rhythms of everyday life and the spaces we inhabit.

The hanok in Changseong-dong, shaped around hanji and wood, draws inspiration from tradition while offering a warm and quiet sense of comfort through its clean, modern touch.
Each piece of furniture and every object has been chosen not only for its function but for the meaning and aesthetic value it carries—an outcome of thoughtful and meticulous curation.
There are four bedrooms in total, including the master bedroom. Each room features a low-profile fabric bed by MUNITO, reflecting the fluid movement between floor-seating and standard seating while harmonizing with the architectural character of the hanok.
The largest bedroom is furnished with a traditional-style yo topper crafted by UHWA, offering a comfortable setup for stays with children.
Along the wall, you’ll find ONHEUK’s inkstone-inspired wall hanger and a bench defined by its clean, restrained lines—both designed to keep your belongings organized with ease.
Soft hanji fabric and blinds by Somidang frame the windows, allowing natural light to filter in with a warm, gentle glow.
The living room is designed with structural sightlines and the depth of floor-seating in mind. A low sofa by MUNITO highlights the horizontal lines of the exposed rafters, while a lounge chair across from it creates a comfortable setting for conversations with family or friends. Soft sunlight filters through Somidang’s *jogakbo* fabric and falls gently onto the low cabinet, above which sits *ECLIPSE* by artist Kwon Jung-mo.
Inspired by traditional *tteoksal* patterns, this hanji-finished lighting object brings a subtle glow and a refined Korean presence to the room. The lounge chair with its graceful, Oriental curves and the pebble-shaped table introduce a modern-traditional balance that feels thoughtful rather than predictable.
The restored *daecheong* wooden floor—kept in its original circular form—serves as the highlight of the space, adding the quiet dignity of a hanok that has endured through time.
This dedicated dining space is designed for sharing meals and conversation with the people you love. The table and chairs comfortably accommodate up to ten guests. At the center of the room stands a black dining table by JACKSON CHAMELEON—its deep wood grain and substantial presence grounding the space with a quiet sense of strength.
In contrast to the bold weight of the table, Yang Jung-mo’s round pendant lamp adds a soft, balancing touch. Along the windows, Somidang’s hanji curtains create a graceful rhythm as they filter the natural light.
A traditional bandaji chest and a Joseon-era grapevine folk painting—also part of the Lee Kun-hee Collection—sit to one side of the dining area, lending a calm, understated elegance that completes the harmony between tradition and modernity.
The hanok in Changseong-dong holds a spacious courtyard—something rarely found in the heart of Seoul. Here, you can feel the sky and the changing seasons up close, and as you walk slowly across the open yard, you may rediscover the simple grounding sensation of touching the earth beneath your feet—something so easily forgotten in the city.
